You have encountered the term AI SEO. Perhaps an agency raised it on a call, or it surfaced on LinkedIn. And your first instinct was probably scepticism: this sounds like the same work under a more expensive name.
That instinct is reasonable. Our industry has a long record of rebranding practices that never required it.
Here is the honest position. AI SEO is not a wholly new discipline. It overlaps substantially with conventional SEO — considerably more than most agencies selling it will concede. But nor is it merely a relabelling exercise. Four things operate on genuinely different principles, and neglecting them will erode your visibility in AI search while your Google rankings continue to look entirely healthy.
First, what AI SEO actually means
AI SEO is the practice of ensuring your business is named when someone poses a question to an AI tool rather than a search engine.
That spans several environments:
- →ChatGPT search, when a user asks it to recommend a supplier
- →Google AI Overviews, the generated summary now positioned above the organic listings
- →Perplexity, which answers directly and attributes its sources
- →Gemini, Google's own assistant
The same discipline is variously described as generative engine optimisation (GEO) or AI search optimisation. The terminology differs; the work does not. Our approach to AI SEO and GEO treats these engines as a single problem, since visibility in one and absence from the rest has limited commercial value.
The significance is structural. A conventional search returns ten links and delegates the choice to the user. An AI query returns a single composed answer naming perhaps three businesses. The shortlist has contracted dramatically — and you are either on it or you are not.
What AI SEO and normal SEO share
Before addressing the differences, the common ground. It is substantial, and any agency implying otherwise is selling you something.
Technical soundness. AI engines derive most of their information from reading web pages. A site that is slow, broken or inaccessible to crawlers is no more legible to them than it is to Google.
Content with genuine substance. Thin pages built solely to accommodate a keyword performed poorly in conventional search and perform worse in AI search. Where a page contains no real answer, there is nothing available to extract.
Demonstrable authority. Both systems are assessing whether you can be trusted. That assessment draws on third-party corroboration — reviews, local press coverage, directory listings, partner and supplier references.
Unambiguous identity. Consistent business information across the web helps Google interpret who you are. It performs precisely the same function for AI engines.
If none of the above is in place, AI SEO is not your immediate problem. Foundational SEO is, and it warrants attention first.
Difference 1: content is built to be extracted, not clicked
Conventional SEO involves deliberate withholding. The objective is to make the searcher curious enough to click, so the headline gestures towards the answer without delivering it and the substance sits several paragraphs into the page.
In AI search, that architecture works against you.
An AI engine is not reading your page at leisure. It is identifying a discrete, self-contained passage that resolves the question it was given. Where the answer is buried in the ninth paragraph or distributed across three separate pages, the engine will draw on a competitor's more legible version instead.
The structural implications are clear. Position the direct answer near the top, in unambiguous sentences. Use headings that mirror the questions users genuinely pose. Ensure each answer remains coherent in isolation, so it survives extraction intact. This is the substance of answer engine optimisation — writing a machine can quote without distortion.
It runs counter to instinct, since you are surrendering the answer deliberately. The exchange is nonetheless favourable: attribution within a source the user already trusts outweighs a click that was never going to materialise.
Difference 2: citations replace rankings as the goal
Conventional SEO gives you a position. You are third for "plumber Chelmsford"; next month you may be second. It is a discrete figure, and its movement is observable.
AI search offers no equivalent. There is no third position. There is a single composed answer, within which a small number of businesses are named — or cited, with attribution back to the source.
Citation is the new ranking.
This reorients the strategy. Rankings are largely a function of your own site; citations are largely a function of the wider web. AI engines draw disproportionately on sources they already regard as dependable, extracting business names from directories, review platforms, local press and sector bodies.
The work therefore shifts outward: establishing accurate details on the platforms AI engines consult, and earning legitimate mentions in places that carry weight. Citations are also unusually persistent — once an engine has settled on a set of sources for a question, it tends to return to them. Early establishment carries more advantage here than in conventional search.
Difference 3: entity clarity beats keyword density
Established SEO practice was fundamentally about lexical matching. If users searched "web design Colchester", the page needed to contain that phrase. Mechanical, and for a long period effective.
AI engines operate differently. They are not matching text strings — they are assembling a representation of what you are: the category of business, the services delivered, the areas covered, the customers served.
That representation is what the industry terms an entity, and the objective is to render yours unambiguous.
This explains why imprecise copy fails so comprehensively. "We deliver bespoke solutions for ambitious brands" conveys nothing an engine can act upon and corresponds to no answerable question. Set against it: "We are a digital marketing agency in Colchester providing SEO, web design, social media marketing and PPC to small businesses across Essex."
The second formulation is less stylish. It is also considerably more useful to a system determining whether to name you.
The reason is worth understanding. Language models learn statistical relationships between words rather than the meanings behind them — the Open University's explainer on how large language models work characterises them as systems that assemble words into plausible sentences without any genuine comprehension of what those words denote. A system that cannot access meaning can work only with the patterns available to it. Precise, factual language supplies those patterns. Promotional abstraction supplies nothing.
In practice this means structured data, plainly factual descriptions, consistent business information across every platform, and content that explicitly links service to location. Not accomplished writing. Unambiguous writing.
Difference 4: measurement gets harder, and that is the honest bit
This is the difference agencies address least readily, so it warrants directness.
Conventional SEO has mature instrumentation: rank trackers, Search Console, analytics platforms. You can trace the keyword to the position, the position to the click, and frequently the click to the enquiry. Imperfect, but a defensible chain of evidence.
AI search offers no comparable apparatus. There is no Search Console for ChatGPT, no rank tracker for Perplexity, and generated answers vary between users and between sessions.
What is available is systematic testing: putting the questions your customers actually ask to each major engine, recording whether you appear and who appears instead, and tracking the movement across successive months. The exercise resembles reputation monitoring rather than reading a scoreboard.
Any agency presenting a precise AI SEO ranking report today is fabricating a figure. The defensible output is a direction of travel, not a decimal place.

This is the point that resolves the original suspicion.
AI SEO cannot be executed well without conventional SEO being executed well first.
Every AI engine reads the same web Google reads. Where a site is slow, its content thin, or its reputation uncorroborated by credible third parties, no volume of AI-oriented work will compensate. No structural technique renders a weak business authoritative to a language model.
AI SEO is therefore neither a rebrand nor a replacement. It is an additional layer built upon competent SEO services in Essex.
